Comment | Licence to preach within the peculiar jurisdiction of the dean of Sarum was granted.
The testimonial states that Lawrence was already curate of Winterbourne Kingston.
'Vacat' is written beside the postscript declaring that the licence was granted.
A separate paper indicates that Lawrence has lost his ordination papers from 1622 when he became a priest. A letter from a William Woodhouse, formerly a secretary to the Bishop of Bath and Wells,(who conducted the Ordination at Michelmus 1622 in the Cathedral Church of St Andrew, Wells). Lawrence has asked him to write a copy of his papers, but Woodhouse says that he lacks the necessary skill to do this. He does however, confirm that Lawrence was ordained priest at the time given. He also refers to the involvement of a "Bishop in Spayne". This letter is preceeded by a more official document in Latin, which also refers to the same incident. (See entry in ordination screen). |
