Document enclosed: letter relating to both resignations of Turnworth and Winterborn Whitchurch (separate documents, records 44-45), 04/12/1771 William Carpenter to the Bishop: resignation would have been sent before but 'material circumstances prevented it. Two or Three Years since your Lordship was pleased to offer me by Mr Archdeacon Walker Twenty Pounds from the Society for apprenticing One of my Children. Unfortunately I had not at that Time One of a proper Age to accept of the Benefaction. If your Lordship would at any Time hereafter be pleased to assist me, it would be conferring a Favour upon One who has a very numerous Family, & but a small Income'. Postcript, that Sir Jeffery Elwes 'after paying a Year & half of the Bounty-Money due to Whitchurch Vicarage, has absolutely refused to pay the last half Year, unless I produce a certificate from your Lordship that I succeeded the late Mr Cobbe as Vicar' |
