Comment | This information is derived from an Indenture between George Smyth, the patron, and Samuel Bennett on how the Free School at Wotton under Edge was to be run etc. It stated that George Smyth had nominated Samuel Bennett after the resignation (date not given) of the former Schoolmaster 'having heretofore for divers years been bred a Schollar in the Same Schoole'. Bennett also received the lease of 'all the Schoole Lands in Nibley at the yearlie Rent of £31-10s'. The patronage of the school had been conveyed to the patron's great-grandfather, John Smyth deceased, on an unstated date by the Rt. Hon. George Lord Berkeley. |
