See VCH, Lancs., VI, 180-1. Bishop Gastrell noted in the 1720s that, 'This Chap[el] is placed at the extremity of the Parish, and seems to have been erected chiefly for the conveniency of the adjoining Parishes, viz. Wigan and Ormskirk, the Congreg[ation] consisting mostly of [the] Inhab[itants] of those Parishes.' It was 4 miles from Eccleston church and 3 miles from the nearest neighbouring church. 'It is supplyed by [the] Rect[or] of Eccleston, or his Curate, every Sunday, except wn. the Sacramt. is administered at the Mother Church'. Gastrell, Notitia Cestrienses, II, iii, 375-6.
