- OXENDON CHAPEL, Oxendon Street (St. Martin's). Blt. 1676 by Mrs. Margt. Baxter for use of her husband Richard: through a friend she leased ground in Oxendon Street for £30 a year ground rent and on the site blt. a chapel with 2 hos. in front to screen it. Baxter preached there once, but Henry Coventry, Secretary of State, whose house was behind the chapel, used local justices to prevent Baxter preaching, and chapel was therefore offered to St. Martin's parish as chapel of ease. When the parish ceased to use it c. 1807 a lease was taken by Scotch Presbs. under Revd. Geo. Jerment. The cong. described in 1814 as Seceders from the Ch. of Scotland, of the Anti-Burgher class, oldest soc. of Seceders in Lond.; cong. small. The chapel was described as a good sq. bldg. with 3 galleries, well fitted. (fn. 252) In 1819 Presbs. under the General Associate Synod of Scotland had been using the chapel for over 10 yrs. and wanted same reg. (fn. 253) In 1851 used by United Presb. Ch. Chapel seated 600, of which 100 free, with 200 standing. Att. 1851: 450 a.m. (fn. 254) On OS map 1870.
