Primarily a house of correction (Prison) for petty offenders, but one side of it also trained apprentices for various trades. According to John Strype, Bridewell Chapel was also used by the inhabitants of Bridewell Precinct, Farringdon Without ward (the precinct lay in the parish of St Bride's). He noted, Bridewel, seated on the West side of Fleet Ditch, a large Building of Brick, inclosing a spacious Court. In this Building is a curious Chappel, made use of by the Inhabitants of the Precinct, for the Worship of God; and by the care of the President and Governours, hath been well kept. This Chappell was much damnified by the general Fire, but is now beautifully restored to its pristine Splendor' (Strype, I, 279).
