Middleton chapelry was consecrated in 1635, and separated from Kirkby Lonsdale in 1732.
In 1722 Gastrell noted that there was a school endowed with 40s. per annum for teaching four poor children, no schoolhouse. In 1725 he recorded that Thomas Rowland had given to the school £20, Philip Walker £3, John Moor £20 (now laid out in land).
