In 1832 Joseph Baxendale gave land in High Road, at the southern end of his Woodside House estate, as a site for a church to serve Whetstone. A chapel of ease, dedicated to ST. JOHN THE APOSTLE, was built there, financed by private subscription and endowed from Queen Anne's Bounty: 'Finchley: Churches', A History of the County of Middlesex: Volume 6: Friern Barnet, Finchley, Hornsey with Highgate (1980), pp. 82-86.
