F. Gastrell, Nottia Cestriensis, 1.250, notes (early 1720s) that there was a master of a school there who has only £3 per annum, from the rent of a house, and interest of £20. In 1693 nomination by the unhabutants, of whom only 4 subscribed their names. In 1709 Ralph Lowndes nominated, who claimed that right upon account of his giving the schoolhouse. Reference to it in diocesan records as free grammar school in 1701. Date of foundation not entirely clear: probably late seventeenth century, and here (somewhat arbitrarilty) foundation date taken from first reference to it as a grammar school from visitation records.
