This church was mainly paid for by the Rev. William Dalton, a famous Wolverhampton preacher. The town was rapidly expanding at the time. St. Peter's and St. John's were getting crowded; St. George's was providing for the expanding eastern sector. Dalton selected this site in anticipation of continuing expansion of this quarter of town: see http://www.localhistory.scit.wlv.ac.uk/lost/stpauls.htm, accessed 24/5/05. &dquote;St Paul's Church is a handsome structure of mixed architecture, in Penn Road, built in 1835, at a cost of £7000, most of which was given by the Rev William Dalton, BD, the first and present patron and incumbent.
