VCH Lancs., II, 605 (which calls it by later name of Penwortham Endowed School: Longton is a chapelry within Penwortham parish). In F. Gastrell, Notitiae Cestrienses, 2.iii, 390, the school appears under Longton. The latter noted that Christopher Walton, yeoman, had founded the school 6 Edw. VI, endowing it with 4 marks & 4d. per annum, arising out of lands in Preston enfeoffed in 12 trustees, inhabitants of the parish, 'who have soe advanced the value of the Lands that there are 2 Masters, tho the maintenance of the one depends very much on the Contrib[utions] of the People'.
