gastrell c. 1720 noted that: 'Here was an old chapel which with the Bishop's leave was taken down and a new one built in another place and consecrated by Bishop Wilkins An. 1671.' It was built on land given by the Earl of Derby by endowment of John Barwick (d. 1664), Dean of St Paul's, who left lands worth £26 per annum to pay the minister and £4 per annum to keep the chapel in repair. the Curate is obliged by Barwick's will in consideration of what he has left to the chapel to teach school freely.
