Separates from Winwick, 1748, as Newchurch in Makerfield
Also occasionally called Culcheth. Date of creation uncertain. Footnotes to Gastrell, Notitia Cestrensies, II.ii, Chetham Soc., vol. 21 (1850), 269, says that it existed 'shortly after the Reformation', and quotes will of 2 Dec. 1559 contributing towards the tenants of Culcheth hiring of a priest. Unclear if the reference to the tenants to provide an endowment means there was no priest provided before.
