In 1685 George Bigland divised to trustees aq close in Furness Fell and his house for the maintenance of a schoolmaster near Brow Edge. His heir should have the profits until the inhabitants of Broiw Edge built a new school. In 1689 his brother left £100 to buy land, of which half the rent was to be given to the school of Brow Edge. later called Upper Holker School. VCH Lancs, II, 617.
