In 1719 the Curate, Thomas Chaddocke [Chadwick], claimed that Ellenbrook was a domestic chapel belonging to Worsley Hall, but Gastrell noted against this that he had been licensed in 1709 upon the Earl of Bridgewater's nomination. In 1655 the Chapel had also then been considered domestic. In 1650 the Commonwealth Church Survey had considered Ellenbrook fit to be made parochial, Gastrell, Notitia Cestrienses, II.ii, 53-4.
