In 1717 Gastrell noted, 'Nothing but the Walls of this Chap[el] are now remaining, and they ruinous'. He noted that soon after the Dissolution of Whalley Abbey, the chapel was endowed with £4 per annum, and Archbishop Juxobn augmented this with £2 per annum, 'tho ruined in the Civill war'. This was what the Curate was paid in 1663, but soon after the money was granted to the Curate of Clitheroe, 'he taking care to procure Preaching once a month at Whitewell'. When he failed to fulfil this obligation, in 1667 Archbishop Sheldon ordered the £6 to be paid to the Curate of Downham upon the same condition. 'But an[no] 1707, Downham being vacant, Abp. Tennison annexed this 6li. p[er] an[num] and the Chap[el] of Whitewell to the Curate of Clitheroe, and so it continues'. gastrell, Notitia Cestrienses, II.iii, 317-9.
