Gastrell noted c. 1720: 'St Chad, supplyed by the two Rectours of Malpas'. His mid-nineteenth-century editor notes that the present chapel was built in 1689. In 1778 Susanna, dau. and heir of Thomas Churton of Whirchurch, gent., claimed the chapel as an appurtenant of the Manor of Tussingham, but afterwards relinquished the claim.
