Adm. (age 18) at KING'S, a Scholar from Eton, Jan. 29, 1779. [4th s. of Richard (and Elizabeth Hutton). B. Sept. 24, 1759, at Reading. Bapt. at St Laurence, Reading, Oct. 24, 1759.] ' Matric. Lent, 1779; B.A. 1783; M.A. 1786; Fellow, 1782-1836; Bursar; Vice-Provost, 1790-2 and in 1834. Ord. deacon (Ely) 1782; priest (Peterb.) 1783; C. of St Edward's, Cambridge, 1782-3. V. of Holy Trinity, Cambridge, 1783-1836. His appointment to Holy Trinity was unpopular, and he at first encountered strong opposition, especially from the undergraduates; later he had a large following, and exerted great and lasting influence in the University, and upon Evangelical thought generally. One of the founders of the C.M.S., 1797. Author, Horae Homileticae (a collection of outlines for sermons on the whole Bible). Died in King's, Nov. 13, 1836; buried in the Chapel. See W.
