R. of Chagford, Devon, 1779-1810. R. of Hepworth, Suffolk, 1810-18. Chaplain to the Prince of Wales (later George IV). Antiquary; sent to Naples by the Prince of Wales to decipher the papyri found at Herculaneum in 1752. Remained at Naples, 1802-6. The editor of the Oxford Fragmenta Herculanensia described him as a poor scholar and his restoration of the text as of little value. Died Dec. 2, 1818, of apoplexy, in Paris.
