Adopted Unitarian views. Classical Tutor at Warrington Unitarian College, 1779-83, and at Hackney College, 1790-1. Imprisoned in Dorchester gaol for issuing a seditious pamphlet, 1799-1801. Described by Henry Crabb Robinson as a political fanatic with 'the pale complexion and mild features of a saint, a most gentle creature in domestic life and a very amiable man; but when he took part in political or religious controversy, his pen was dipped in gall'. Married, Mar. 1779, Anne Watson, niece of the Rev. - Watson, R. of Stockport. Author, Silva critica, the Union of Theological and Classical learning; Memoirs, etc., and edited the Georgics, Horace and Lucretius. Died Sept. 9, 1801, at Hackney.
