Jan. 14, 1771, in the parish of St Andrew Undershaft, London. [School, Dr Newcome's, Hackney.] ' Matric. Michs. 1789. Migrated to Peterhouse, Oct. 28, 1789; B.A. 1793; M.A. 1796. Adm. ad eundem at Oxford, 1817. Ord. deacon, 1796; priest, 1800. P.C. of St John's Chapel, South Hackney (which he partially endowed), 1809-31; R. 1831-50. Preb. of Llandaff, 1816; of St Paul's, 1825. Chaplain to the Earl of Shaftesbury. ‘He came to be known as the head of the High Church party, and his influence in the religious world was far-reaching. Rumour secured for him the title of the “Bishopmaker.” From 1793-1834 he largely ruled the proceedings of the S.P.C.K.’ Married, June 19, 1805, Henrietta Catherine, dau. of David Powell, and had issue.
