Assistant Paymaster to the Forces under Wellington in the Peninsula, 1813; wounded at the battle of Toulouse, 1814. Ord. deacon, 1816; priest (London) June 2, 1822; C. of Crayford, Kent, 1816. Teacher of Hebrew to the Jews at Hackney College, 1830-2. Professor of Hebrew at the Missionary College, Islington, 1836. P.C. of Holy Trinity, Hoxton, Middlesex, 1848-80. When in Portugal, devoted his leisure time to translating the Bible into Portuguese; his version was adopted both by protestants and catholics. Publicly thanked by Don Pedro I of Portugal. His peninsular experiences published in Blackwood's Magazine, 1849. A noted Hebrew scholar and antiquary; contributed valuable papers to the 2nd Ser., Notes and Queries, sometimes under the assumed name of ‘Vedette.’ Author, theological, etc. Died Sept. 2, 1880, aged 88, at 23, Leighton Road, Kentish Town, London.
