Not university educated. Son of Joseph and Martha; born Dewsbury, Yorks. Nov. 1791; worked in wool trade. Educated to be missionary by two local evangelical clergy; ordained deacon 6 Aug. 1815; priest 17 Dec. 1815; curate Harewood, Yorks. Missionary (CMS) to Kerala, India for 34 years; founded Kottayam mission; lexicographer, translator, architect. Returned to England for sake of his health in 1856; rector of Sheinton, Salop and Rural Dean of Condover, to his his death 3 Apr. 1871.
