Report of his death in The Gentleman's Magazine 1.1774, p.46 'At Slaley, in Northumberland, aged 77, the Rev. Mr. Wharton. He was 50 years in the Ministry, and his salary never exceeded 30 l. per ann. With this small pittance he brought up 11 children to maturity, six of whom are still living.'
