SEE OXFORD DNB: Wells, Francis (1606/7–1684x9), Church of England clergyman.
VCH for Oxfordshire describes controversy surrounding this man, described as a puritan, put in as minister at Adderbury, removed at Restoration after Chancery action (accused by parishioners of refusing them the sacrament and profaning it by allowing lay administration - Calamy Rev. 519); he is after that connected with Tewkesbury from which his brother (John) had been ejected 1662 as an Independent; papers in Gloucestershire Record Office (D747) include letter from Francis Welles as curate of Tewkesbury, asking for better remuneration and/or income from annexed chapels; he appears to have been suspended in 1678; records give a birth date of 1606 and death (uncertain) 1689 which tie up with information in Oxford DNB
