From 1839 spent his time chiefly in visiting and sketching old churches in England and abroad. C. of Bradfield, Essex, 1840-8. Lived at Uplands, Shifnal, Salop, from 1849-64, and subsequently at Lichfield. Published numerous architectural works, including Architectural Studies in France. A founder of the British Archaeological Institute (at Cambridge) in 1844, Hon. M.I.B.A. Married, June 17, 1828, Louisa Elizabeth, dau. of George Reid, Esq., of Trelawny, Jamaica.
