' Matric. Michs. 1798. Migrated to Sidney, Apr. 9, 1800; B.A. 1802; M.A. per Lit. Reg. 1805; B.D. per Lit. Reg. 1811. Fellow of Sidney, 1804. Lord Almoner's Professor of Arabic, 1815-21. Served as British Chaplain at Constantinople, 1804-6, also at Smyrna, 1810-14. Travelled much in the East. While in Smyrna discovered a figure on a rock which he identified with Herodotus' Sesostris. An admirable classical scholar, and well acquainted with French, German, and Italian, as well as with Arabic, Turkish, and Hebrew. Had also a considerable reputation as a geographer and botanist. C. of Great St Mary's, Cambridge, 1806-11. C. of Grantchester, Cambs., 1814-18. R. of Swanscombe, Kent, 1818-67. Author, Classical and Oriental. Died, unmarried, Feb. 15, 1867; buried in Swanscombe church. Step-brother of the next. (St Paul's Sch. Reg.; Boase, III. 114; D.N.B., which calls him Fellow of Trinity, 1804; C.U. Hist. Reg., 89.)
