School, Ayr Grammar; and at King's College, Glasgow (M.A. 1777).] ' Matric. Easter, 1800; B.D. (Stat. Eliz.) 1800. Sometime private tutor to a family in London, where he met Samuel Johnson, who described him as a ‘modest and decent man’; admitted to Johnson's circle. Minister of Ardclach, Nairn, 1779; his presentation was highly unpopular, the church was deserted, and after a year he was forced to resign the living. On Johnson's advice he left the Church of Scotland and joined the Church of England. R. of Chelvey, Somerset, 1795-1831. F.S.A.
