Ord. deacon (Bath and Wells), Oct. 9, 1825; priest, Dec. 31, 1826. C. of Mudford, Somerset, 1825-31. C. of Little Compton, Gloucs.; C. of Lassington. In Circassia and the Crimea during the Russian War. Known as "The Bard of the Forest." Wanted to marry his housekeeper; was told by the Bishop that if he did so he must leave his curacy, so gave up the marriage, but left Mudford. Author, An autobiography of an eventful life; Poems and Tales; Rustic's Lay; Adventures in Circassia (largely imaginary); etc. Died Feb. 6, 1864, "aged 69" (Boase, III. 1332; Glos. N. and Q., II. 356-7.)
