In 1716 Dean Pratt attempted to get Batley appointed as hm of the school solely on his own authority causing a dispute. Batley applied for his licence to bishop Atterbury, but was refused as inadequately qualified. A review a year later saw Atterbury insist that when a better qualified candidate was available he be replaced, and Batley duly resigned when William Dormer was appointed. (Mussett, 1996: 91, 104)
