Ord. deacon (Bristol) 1812; priest, 1812; R. of St Paul's, Shadwell, 1812-43. R. of Darfield, Yorks. 1812 25. C. of Wombwell, 1812-25. Preb. of Lincoln, 1812-61. Mathematical Professor and Dean in the East India College, Haileybury, 1813-37; Principal, 1837-43; resigned. Married, 1814, Sophia, dau. of Mark Hodgson, of the Bow brewery, inventor of ‘India pale ale.’ Author, Considerations on Miracles; Life of Thomas F. Middleton, Bishop of Calcutta; Life of Wicliff; Life of Cranmer; Life of Laud, etc., and of nearly eighty articles in the British Critic. Resided latterly at Brighton, where he died Jan. 25, 1861.
