Samuel Alford, of Heale House. Edited the Greek Testament, 1849-61. Realising the value of the work done by the German critics, went to Bonn and studied German, 1847. Undertook other biblical works and commenced a Commentary on the Old Testament. Editor of Dearden's [p.31] Magazine, and the first editor of the Contemporary Review. One of the revisers of the New Testament. Edited the works of Dr Donne (7 vols.) for J. W. Parker. Published a translation of the Odyssey in blank verse. A man of varied accomplishments: poet, musician and composer; wrote the wellknown Harvest Hymn, "Come ye thankful people, come", and the Baptismal Hymn, "In token that thou shalt not fear"; a water-colour painter; also possessed considerable mechanical skill.
