D.D. (Edin.) 1775. F.S.A., 1778. J.P. for Lincs. Intended for the Bar but his health broke down. Was ordained, and immediately appointed Chaplain to Dr Edmund Law, Bishop of Carlisle. V. of Swinderby and R. of Panton, Lincs., 1769-82. Adopted Unitarian views, 1782, throwing up his preferments and offering his services in Essex Street Chapel, London, to his friend Theophilus Lindsey. First Secretary of a Unitarian Society for promoting knowledge of the Scriptures, 1783. Became sole minister of Essex Street, 1793; resigned, 1805, when he was unexpectedly made heir of T. B. Hollis, of The Hyde, Ingatestone, Essex. Active in securing statutory relief for Unitarians, 1813. A well-known agriculturist and energetic magistrate. Joined the Notts. Co. Committee for retrenchment and Parliamentary reform, 1780. Married, Nov. 17, 1774, Jane, dau. of Francis Blackburne, R. of Richmond, Yorks. Resided latterly for a time at Bath. Publications, Controversial papers and some Memoirs; edited the Discourses of his cousin, Edmund Disney, LL.B., 1788; and, with Charles Butler, A New Translation of the Book of Psalms, 1807, from MSS. of Alex Geddes, LL.D. Died Dec. 26, 1816, at Ingatestone. The Disneys were an old Norman family long seated at Norton D'Isney and Swinderby, Lincs. Brother of Lewis (1757); father of the next and of Algernon (1796). (T.
