Presented by his father to the cure of St Andrew's, Newcastle, 1834-49. The recognized leader of Puseyism in Newcastle. A determined opponent of the pew-rent system; one of his first acts on becoming vicar was to take a hammer and remove the locks on the pew doors and all footstools and cushions in them. Organized the erection of St Peter's church, Newcastle. His health was affected by his strenuous work and he accepted the quiet country living of Chillingham, Northumberland, 1849, which he held till his death. Author, Sermons; On the Schools and Education in the Islands of Majorca and Minorca. Died May 8, 1866, at Nice while on a visit there. Buried there.
