Coleridge and of Charles Lamb, who describes him as ‘a scholar and a gentleman in his teens,’ whose manner was ‘firm, but mild and unassuming.’ Ord. deacon (Lincoln) 1792; C. of Gainsborough, Lincs., 1792. While there, edited, and largely wrote, a weekly periodical, The Country Spectator, 1792-3. Tutor to the two sons of the Archdeacon of Lincoln. R. of Tansor, Northants., 1795-1811. R. of Little and V. of Castle Bytham, Lincs., 1802-11. Editor of the British Critic, 1811. His book, The Doctrine of the Greek Article applied to the Criticism and the Illustration of the New Testament, published in 1808, went through five editions. Preb. of Lincoln, 1809. V. of St Pancras, London, 1811-14. R. of Puttenham, Herts., 1811-14. Archdeacon of Huntingdon, 1812. Bishop of Calcutta, 1814-22. Founder of the Bishop's Mission College at Calcutta, 1820. Married, 1797, Elizabeth, eldest dau. of John Maddison, of Alvingham, Lincs. Died of fever, July 8, 1822; buried in Calcutta Cathedral. There is a statue of him in St Paul's Cathedral.
