Adm. pens. (age 22) at TRINITY, Jan. 30, 1759. [2nd] s. of George, of Overthwaite, Westmorland. School, Sedbergh, Yorks. (Mr Bateman). ' Matric. Easter, 1759. C. of Beetham, Westmorland, 1760-2; V. there, 1762-1811. Built Beetham House, near Milnthorpe, and made his residence there. Married (1) Mary, dau. of John Hutton, of Helslack, Westmorland; (2) Lucy, dau. of Rigby Molyneux, M.P. for Preston, and had issue. Antiquary. Kept a large folio book called the ‘Repository’ in the vestry of Beetham Church, in which he entered a record of parish affairs from an early period. It has been continued by his successors. Author, A Bran New Wark, by William de Worfat, containing a true Calendar of his Thoughts concerning good Nebberhood (in the local dialect); reprinted by the English Dialect Society, 1879.
