Instituted to the Vicarage of Harewood, near Leeds, on the nomination of the parishioners, 1667.Elected Fellow of Manchester Collegiate Church 24 Jan. 1680/1.Collated to Ribchester, 1681.
Ogden was an antiquary and collector of Roman remains.
Ogden died at Manchester, and was bur. in the Collegiate Church, 27 July 1706.
Raines also prints two letters from Bishop Stratford urging Ogden to reside at Ribchester (1.185-6). On 2 June 1692 he wrote to Ogden reminding him of the promise that he had made to him in May 1691 that he would reside: 'I therefore beseech you once more to consider the obligation you are under to residence; not only from the promise you made to me, but from the Laws of our Church, and from the oath that you tooke at your institution into your Vicarage, and from many other Sacred ties'. If Ogden cites the dispensation that he had from Bishop Pearson for non-residence, he must know that that expired many years ago. The dispensation, dated 31 Aug. 1682, was for no longer that he needed to finish his repairs to his vicarage house: 'Now I appeal to yourself, Whether you could not have conveniently finish'd the repairs of your house in fewer years than ten? yea Whether you could not have conveniently finish'd them in one year? I pray let me know speedily, whether you intend forthwith to reside or to resigne'.
A second letter, dated 8 July 1692, repaeted the question whether he intended to resign or reside. Stratford swept away Ogden's claim that his oath as fellow of Manchester Collegiate Church also required his residence, pointing out that the oath of perpetual residence there allowed for either residence or freely submitting to a fine, and pointing out, 'That you had Institution to Ribchester, and the care and charge of all the Souls in the parish committed to your trust; which you had not at your Admission at your Fellowship of Manchester.'
From a further letter, 5 Nov. 1692, from Dr William Cooke (President of Jesus College, Cambridge) to ogden, Cooke agreed that thre Bishop's views on the law of residence were correct, though he regretted that the Bishop was insisting upon Ogden's residence at Ribchester, as he allowed other clergy to be absent from their benefices. The Vicarage House was then stated to be in a fit state for the Vicar to occupy (Raines, 1.187).
