There is only one record for a John Smith of St John's, Oxford, at this time, so it seems likely that 'deacon' in the 1718 ordination record is an error.
Foster: Smith, JOhn, s. John, of Whitechapel, London, gent. St John's Coll., matric. 4 July 1713, aged 19, BA 1717, fellow, MA 1721, proctor 1727, BD 1728; vicar of North Leigh, Oxon, 1727-31, and chaplain to the British factory at Oporto, where he died 31 Jan 1730-1, will at Oxford proved 13 Sept 1732. See Robinson, ii. 11, and 20.
