[He was the son of a poor village haircutter; sent to College by the liberality of Sir Thomas Hesilrige, and other neighbours.] Scholar, 1786; matric. Michs. 1787; B.A. 1791 (2nd Wrangler); Smith's prize, 1791. Fellow, 1791. Went, as astronomer, on a voyage of discovery in the Pacific. Murdered, together with a Lieutenant of the ship, by the natives, at Woahoo, near Hawaii, May 13, 1792. There are a number of his letters in the University Library. (Venn, II. 113.)
