A close friend of Henry Martyn (the missionary), Senior Wrangler of 1801, although in the heat of a discussion Martyn threw a knife at him which fortunately missed its aim, entering the opposite wall where it remained trembling with the concussion (Sargent, Life of Henry Martyn). C. of Tutbury, Staffs. P.C. of Lane End, Staffs., 1805-17; established a Sunday School there. P.C. of St Paul's, Sheffield, 1817-23. Author, Sermons; A selection of Psalms and Hymns adapted for Festivals of the Church of England; Family Prayers, etc. Died Dec. 29, 1823, aged 44. Buried in St Paul's Church. M.I.
