Ord. deacon (Peterb., Litt. dim. from Ely) 1778; priest (Peterb.) 1781; C. of St Botolph's, Cambridge. Lecturer of Holy Trinity, Cambridge, 1783-7, where his popularity was so great that the parishioners tried to persuade the Bishop to appoint him incumbent instead of Charles Simeon. After the death of his first wife travelled on the Continent for three years. Returned to England, and bought an estate at Fenstanton, Cambs., devoting himself to the cultivation and improvement of the property. A good mathematical and classical scholar; well versed in Italian, French and German, also in Hebrew and Arabic. An enthusiastic lover of music; himself a good violinist. Became a Unitarian. Married twice, his first wife being Millicent, dau. of James Essex, F.S.A., the architect, of Cambridge. Died June 7, 1830. Doubtless father of John (1818). (Northants.
