Adm. sizar at ST JOHN'S, Mar. 15, 1821, of Kent. S. of , surgeon. B. Apr. 10, 1802, at Tenterden, Kent. ' Matric. Michs. 1821; B.A. 1825; M.A. 1837. Ord. deacon (Norwich) June 18; priest, Oct. 1826. Came under the influence of Charles Simeon, the evangelical leader whose guidance directed his missionary zeal into Jewish channels. Joined the Rev. R. S. Alexander, a converted Rabbi; learned Hebrew and German and worked with him among the Jews at Dantzig, 1827-30, at Breslau, 1831. Suffered much persecution, went to Berlin, 1832. Had great success there; [p.104] their lectures and classes being attended by people of all ranks including royalty, but objection was taken to the use of Prussian liturgy and Bishop Blomfield ruled that the English liturgy must be used and translated before preaching; this ended the work in Berlin, 1837. Visited various stations on the Continent, 1838. Foreign Secretary to the Jews' Society, 1841-53. Lecturer at the Jews' Episcopal Chapel, 1845-53. V. of Egerton, Kent, 1853-83. Author, The Jews of the XIXth Centurya collection of Essays, Reviews and Historical Noticesoriginally published in the Jewish Intelligence; also Sermons. Died Jan. 19, 1883, aged 80, at Egerton.
