There seem to be a number of problems with the clerical history of this man. Only one William Spurdens appears in Foster - son of William of Hoxne, Suffolk, pleb. ST EDMUND HALL, matric. 1799 aged 21.
The entry continues 'died Beccles 3 Nov. 1806' so either there were two of this name or the mention of date of death is wrong - or both explanations suspected. The rest of the entry fits the one called William Tylney Spurdens. A death of a William Spurdens, clergyman of Beccles, Suffolk, ('untimely' i.e. young) is noted in G. Mag. 1806, vol. 76, Pt II, p. 1084 but as yet there are no records for this Spurdens in CCEd .
Details at www.oldpastonians.org/headmasters.html (accessed 2 April 2017) states that William Tylney Spurdens was head of this school at North Walsham, Norfolk, from 1807 -1825, that he was educated at St Edmund Hall, but had no degree, although frequently he was credited with a variety of degrees. Reference to the Paston School below mentions him only as schoolmaster in 1818. Other dates fit, born/baptised 1776, Hoxne, Suffolk, died 1852.
No explanation yet found for the adoption of the additional name of Tylney (no link with the family who held this name), nor why one of the CCEd records should call him bart. as he does not seem to have been. Also no explanation for any connection with parishes of Brobury or Bredwardine, but the distinctiveness of his name makes it likely that this is the same man - he had curates there during his rectorship and also presented himself- perhaps a useful source of income.
Author best known for his translation from the Greek of 'Longinus - The Sublime...', also wrote other archaeological and historical articles.
