Adm. sizar at EMMANUEL, July 7, 1768. Of Warwickshire. S. and h. of the Rev. Henry (CCE11937), R. of Birdingbury, Warws. (for whom see D.N.B.). B. 1753, at Warwick. School, Rugby. Studied for three years at Birmingham. ' Matric. Michs. 1769; Scholar; B.A. 1773; M.A. 1776; B.D. 1783. Fellow, 1778-88 (failing to take priest's Orders, owing to religious scruples, deprived of his Fellowship). An intimate friend of Dr Samuel Parr, whom he assisted in the republication of Bellenden's Tracts, and the preparation of editions of classical authors. Undertook, in collaboration with Dr Charles Combe, a splendid Variorum edition of Horace, but died before its publication. His editions of Tacitus, Livy, etc., are also remarkable for the accuracy of the text and the beauty of their typography. Died May 4, 1791, at Birdingbury. M.I. there.
