In charge of the National Society's school at Holborn, 1812-40. Taught on the Bell system. He became a trainer of masters, a travelling organiser, an inspector of schools, and later (1840), cashier and comptroller of accounts of the National Society. Presented by the Czar of Russia with a diamond ring, 1821, for his exertions in favour of four students sent to England to study the system of education adopted at the National Central School. The Patriarch of National Education. Friend of Wordsworth, Southey, and Lord Kenyon. Married, 1822, Mary, dau. of Robert Tabrum, of Clapton House.
