He originated the idea of providing a public boarding school education (chiefly for sons of clergymen) at a moderate cost; the proposal was taken up in London and in Aug. 1843, Marlborough College was opened with 202 boys. Died Feb. 2, 1854, aged 55, at Sydenham, Kent, where he had just arrived to visit his son who was at school there, when on extending his hand to him, he fell down and almost instantly expired.
