His mother was half-sister to the poet Mason, of Aston, and he inherited Mason's estates and some interesting MSS. by Mason and Gray now in the York Minster Library. Did much work in extending and arranging James Torres's MSS., Annals of the Members of York Cathedral. After his death the publication of his Fasti Eboracenses was made as a memorial to him; Canon James Raine made further ten years' research and the first volume appeared in 1863.
