Head Master of Rugby School, where he made great reforms and much increased the number of boys, 1778-94. Preb. of Worcester and R. of Harvington, Worcs., 1797-1804. Married (1) Dec. 21, 1779, Elizabeth, elder dau. of John Mander, of Coventry; (2) in 1785, Arabella, 4th dau. of W. Caldecott, of Catthorpe, Leics., and had issue. Author, An Account of Eton Discipline in 1766; An Account of King's College Chapel, Cambridge; A Compendium of Geography; The Principal Propositions of the 5th Book of Euclid demonstrated algebraically. Contributed compositions in Greek and Latin to Musae Etonienses. Founded a prize for declamations at King's, 1786. Walter Savage Landor, one of his pupils at Rugby, was expelled for repeated acts of rebellion and insolence. Died Sept. 24, 1804, at Harvington.
