There is a good deal of confusion about the history of this man; he has been confused with another of the same name who was V of Ickleburgh ID 127955 etc.
Venn: Adm. sizar, aged 15 at CHRIST'S 17 Feb. 1659/60. Son of Thomas (and Jane dau. of Sir John Mede of [Wendon] Lofts, Essex, knight) and perhaps grandson of Thomas (1601). Born at Gonville Hall [Gonvile Manor], Wymondham, Norfolk; bapt. 6 Nov. 1645 at Lofts, Essex (his mother's home); school Elmden, Essex (Mr. Howorth). Matric. 1660; BA 1663/4; MA 1671 (by Lit. Reg.); fellow Peterhouse 1664-8. R Icklingham St James, Suffolk 1673-89*; R of Fretherne, Gloucs 1695-1701 [VCH states 1695-1704]. Went to North America with George Keith, first SPG missionary to America, as chaplain of HMS Centurion. Arrived Boston (Mass.) 1702, labouring at Burlington (NJ) 1704 [and a host of other parishes]. Consecrated non juror Bishop 1722 on a visit to England; died Burlington NJ 29 Nov. 1729. (See SPG records; GM Hills, Burlington; Blomefield II 503; TA Walker 125 where he is called son of Thomas (1636) and grandson of Clere (1608) but this is apparently in error and not in agreement with Blomefield).
None of the secondary evidence about his family and history in England appear to be trustworthy. See also John Talbot ID 127955 etc. Errors consistently repeated in all the American Episcopal church references and other accounts of his life in America.
* This is clearly an error
