Adm. sizar at ST JOHN'S, June 5, 1756. B. in Yorkshire. School, Scorton (Mr Noble). ' Matric. Michs. 1756; B.A. 1760. Previously apprenticed to a surgeon and apothecary at Northallerton. Ord. deacon (Peterb., Litt. dim. from Chester) Mar. 2, 1760 (Joye); priest (Durham) Sept. 21, 1760; C. of Smeaton, Yorks., 1760. V. of Grinton, 1783-99. Owing to his early training in medicine, he was able to administer to the poor in a twofold manner. Died May 20, 1799, at Smeaton. His corpse was carried to the grave by six poor men and the same number of bearers, all of whom had suits of dark grey clothes bequeathed to them. Left a legacy of £100 for the better provision of the necessitous clergy and their families in the N. Riding of Yorks. (Northants. Clergy; St John's Coll. Adm., III. 645; G. Mag., 1799, I. 528.)
